Origin: Czechoslovakia (former)

Much of the lighting we salvage and restore from the former Eastern Bloc was produced in the manufacturing powerhouses of the former Czechoslovakia. Under Communist rule the same design was often manufactured in three scaled versions to cater for varying bulb wattage. The country is also famed for its beautiful glassware, with both wall and ceiling opaline glass lights often being used in public and residential settings, such as housing blocks and schools.

Restoration

Different materials require different processes. At Skinflint we are fascinated by interesting surfaces and patinas, that’s why we tend not to repaint our lights as this can make them look too ‘new’ and they lose some of their of individuality. During restoration non-ferrous metals such as aluminium are often sealed using crystalline waxes, or occasionally left raw so the surface can develop an interesting lustre over time. Ferrous metals such as iron and steel will usually have a clear lacquer powder-coated onto the surface to prevent oxidisation. Woods are waxed to bring out grain and protect the surface. All forms of surface sealing are designed to protect and enhance the surface of the lights.

A quick word from our customers

1940s Industrial lights

Couldn't justify spending at the higher end of Skinflint's product range as out of my budget but the quality of what I bought being around a third of the cost of their top end items is exceptional. Recommended
