Origin: UK

Lighting design in the UK benefitted from a free market. Different companies were working at the same time, designing and producing similar products for the same market. Often with only slight differences in their style, they constantly upgraded and improved their original designs. The products we salvage come from the old industrial heartland of England. This area of the UK was once the boiler room of the British economy - from the potteries of Stoke, through the engineering works of Birmingham, to the wool, textile and cotton mills of Oldham and Manchester.

Restoration

At skinflint we are fascinated by the interesting surfaces and patinas in the vintage lights that we find. That’s why we tend not to repaint surfaces, instead committing to preserving and protecting the heritage - and uniquely worn aesthetic - of each piece. Once a salvaged light arrives in our workshop it is examined to determine its materiality and best restoration process. Non-ferrous metals such as aluminium are often sealed using waxes, or occasionally left raw so the surface can develop an interesting lustre over time.

Coughtrie

Manufacturer: Coughtrie

Established in 1941 on Montrose Avenue, Hillington Estate, Glasgow, Scotland, Coughtrie is one of the few companies from this period still in operation. Their name continues to be associated with reliable industrial wall or ceiling mounted bulkhead fittings. Over the years we have salvaged many beautiful lights made by Coughtrie, with their classic castings; lights that have in most cases, outlasted the buildings for which they were originally designed.

A quick word from our customers

Beautiful Light!

I toyed with this light for ages before I bought it, thinking it was a lot of money. When I eventually ordered and received the light, I was not disappointed. I love this light, so heavy, chunky and in my eyes, gorgeous. It will look brilliant in my dining room, in my newly renovated farmhouse.

A real gem!

What a great little product, saves masses of time and cost rewiring. Will be back for more!

Versatile light

Great light. It looks very smart. I was initially worried that it might be slightly big for the room (we don't have high ceilings) but it looks great and I am really pleased with it.

I love your vintage lights

Thank you skinflint for allowing me to add character to my espresso bar and work desk space! And thanks as well for the fabulous customer service.
