Fawley Power Station red bulkheads

Era: 1950s Origin: UK

Stop! These 1950s bulkhead lights by Coughtrie were salvaged from Fawley Power Station’s famous control room. A polished aluminium enclosure houses a bright red diffused glass lens which previously played a vital role in signalling operational faults within the power station’s turbine. Great for making a statement on walls or ceilings in bars, restaurants and cafes.

Origin: UK

Lighting design in the UK benefitted from a free market. Different companies were working at the same time, designing and producing similar products for the same market. Often with only slight differences in their style, they constantly upgraded and improved their original designs. The products we salvage come from the old industrial heartland of England. This area of the UK was once the boiler room of the British economy - from the potteries of Stoke, through the engineering works of Birmingham, to the wool, textile and cotton mills of Oldham and Manchester.

Restoration

These bulkheads are part of a haul of varying vintage lights from the iconic - and now sadly demolished - Fawley Power Station in Hampshire, UK. As part of our research investigating each light’s history, our team delved into our internal archive and found these particular bulkheads in an 1954 original manufacturer’s catalogue by Coughtrie. It means we can accurately date these fittings and ensure their restoration is true to the original design.

Coughtrie

Manufacturer: Coughtrie

Established in 1941 on Montrose Avenue, Hillington Estate, Glasgow, Scotland, Coughtrie is one of the few companies from this period still in operation. Their name continues to be associated with reliable industrial wall or ceiling mounted bulkhead fittings. Over the years we have salvaged many beautiful lights made by Coughtrie, with their classic castings; lights that have in most cases, outlasted the buildings for which they were originally designed.
