1950s navy searchlight

Era: 1950s Origin: U.S.A

This striking one-off floor light started life as a searchlight in the US navy. Originally manufactured in the 1950s by Crouse-Hinds, the optic comprises a two-part aluminium enclosure with bronze detailing, manufacturer's markings and a linear prismatic lens. Now mounted to an adjustable stand previously used on film sets, restored and ready for its next chapter in homes, and private residences.

Origin: U.S.A

Unlike the communist Eastern Bloc countries, lighting design in mid-century U.S.A. benefitted from a free market. Different companies were working at the same time designing and producing similar products for the same market, often with only slight differences in their style. Due to the location we rarely have the opportunity to reclaim and restore light fixtures from the U.S.A., but some of our perennial favourites are the old signal lights that adorned the highways of the midwest. We reconfigure and restore these timeless classics into functional pendant lights, for both residential and commercial use.

Restoration

Wherever possible we retain the original finish of a light in respect to its authentic history and heritage. However, sometimes leaving a surface as we find it just isn’t possible. These pendants have been restored in our workshops: first soda blasted to remove their degraded surface; then polished to add shine and grain, bringing out the light’s character through surface and patina. This also highlights any original manufacturer’s casting details.

Found in our internal archive of lighting material, the extract below is taken from an original 1930s printed manufacturer's catalogue by Crouse-Hinds Company.

Crouse Hinds

Manufacturer: Crouse Hinds

Crouse Hinds is one of the oldest light manufacturers in the U.S. and were founded during 1897 in Syracuse, New York. Initially producing a patented tram car headlight, the firm grew to produce (amongst other items) switches, electrical conduits, traffic lights, airport lighting and even the lighting for Panama Canal. The company name is still in use today as a subsidiary of Cooper Industries, however the traffic signal production ended in 1981.
