Origin: Czechoslovakia (former)

Much of the lighting we salvage and restore from the former Eastern Bloc was produced in the manufacturing powerhouses of former Czechoslovakia. Under Communist rule the same design was often manufactured in three scaled versions to cater for varying bulb wattage. The country is also famed for its beautiful glassware, with both wall and ceiling opaline glass lights often being used in public and residential settings, such as housing blocks and schools.

Restoration

Lights in our oxide range, such as this one, have specially treated steel and iron enclosures. Arriving in our workshop in varying stages of degradation, the lights are individually oxidised in our workshops to create an interesting array of rich surface patinas. They are then sealed using a specialist preservation technique to prevent further ageing, securing their safe use and unique aesthetic for years to come.

A piece of history

We found exactly what we wanted at skinflint: large industrial pendant lights from an old Dunlop Aerospace factory. They fill the space beautifully and we often get asked where they were sourced. With such heritage attached to them, they are like a piece of history that adds to the modern vintage feel we wanted to create.
