1950s British industrial lights by Thorlux

Era: 1950s Origin: UK

Early linear pendants by 'Thorlux', salvaged from a factory in the industrial heartland of the North of England, UK. Originally made in the 1950s the pendants feature a new LED lamp and vents to the top which allow a degree of uplighting when illuminated.

UK

Origin: UK

Lighting design in the UK benefitted from a free market. Different companies were working at the same time, designing and producing similar products for the same market. Often with only slight differences in their style, they constantly upgraded and improved their original designs. The products we salvage come from the old industrial heartland of England. This area of the UK was once the boiler room of the British economy - from the potteries of Stoke, through the engineering works of Birmingham, to the wool, textile and cotton mills of Oldham and Manchester.

Restoration

The lights have been refurbished by hand with a vitreous enamelled green shade, with lipped detailing, that shows slight wear and surface patina emphasising the age and industrial heritage of the lights. Complete with the original lacquered steel brackets, the vented sahde allows a degree of uplighting when the products are illuminated, making these real feature pendants.

About the LED lamp

This product is fitted with the latest in linear LED technology. The LED bulb, with integral driver, has an average life of 50,000 hours, and is located within an etched diffusion sleeve to prevent any glare and creates an even distribution of warm light (3000k).

Whats the difference in brightness between a LED bulb, a fluorescent bulb and a traditional 60w filament bulb?

In simple terms, bulb brightness is measured in lumens. Lumens (denoted by lm) are a measure of the total amount of visible light (to the human eye) from a bulb or light source. As a comparison, an LED bulb is 2475lm, a fluorescent bulb of the same length is 2460lm and a traditional 60w filament bulb is 800lm.

A quick word from our customers

A piece of history

We found exactly what we wanted at skinflint: large industrial pendant lights from an old Dunlop Aerospace factory. They fill the space beautifully and we often get asked where they were sourced. With such heritage attached to them, they are like a piece of history that adds to the modern vintage feel we wanted to create.
