    Ediswan Lights Archive

American Thomas Edison was not the first to patent the modern design of the light bulb - in the UK, Joseph Swan's patent predated it. Edison lost in the British courts for infringement of Swan's patent and as part of the settlement, Edison was forced to take Swan in as a partner in his British electric works. The company was registered in 1883 as the ‘Edison and Swan United Electric Light Co.’ In 1916, the company rebranded as Ediswan. In the 1920s it first became part of BTH, then subsequently part of AEI, although production continued under the Ediswan brand into the 1950s.
