1950s ex heat lamp by PIFCO

This British-made lamp by PIFCO was once used for heat therapy at home - a treatment popularised in the first half of the 20th century. Now converted and sensitively restored for modern-day use as a table light. Retro in style with its stepped brushed and lacquered steel base, the polished aluminium shade can be adjusted at the top of the stem to direct light. Also angled at the base, it is great for task lighting on a desk, worktop or bedside table.

Lighting design in the UK benefitted from a free market. Different companies were working at the same time, designing and producing similar products for the same market. Often with only slight differences in their style, they constantly upgraded and improved their original designs. The products we salvage come from the old industrial heartland of England. This area of the UK was once the boiler room of the British economy - from the potteries of Stoke, through the engineering works of Birmingham, to the wool, textile and cotton mills of Oldham and Manchester.

Restoration

Once a light has undergone preparatory treatment and any degraded surfaces have been removed, we begin the journey to bring it back to life. At skinflint the work we do is about protecting and preserving the individual heritage of each piece that we salvage. So instead of repainting surfaces, with ferrous metals such as iron and steel, we linish the surface on large rotating wire wheels to add depth and grain, highlighting any original casting details to bring out the light’s character through surface and patina.

Each light is supplied tested and rewired with a new screw (E27) lamp holder, 2mtrs of elephant grey braided cable, inline switch and plug. If you would prefer another colour cable, please just ask.

Pifco (Provincial Incandescent Fittings Co. Ltd) of Failsworth, Manchester were established in 1900 as manufacturers of lighting appliances and accessories. The company went on to purchase many smaller companies, and manufactured a wide range of electrical items including cookers, heaters and cycle lamps. Pifco is most remembered for its distinctive range of heat therapy lamps, predominantly for use within the home - heat therapy was a popular treatment for many ailments in the early to mid 20th century and, when converted, the beautifully designed lamps make wonderful modern desk lights.
