Vintage kitchen pendant lights, Columbus Ohio

3 years ago Commercial

A reimagining of an early 1900’s prairie-style home in the historic Olde Towne East neighbourhood of Columbus, Ohio, is a fitting setting for the mix of vintage and contemporary furniture and lighting within. The house and our vintage lighting were recently featured in Remodelista’s ‘Kitchen of the Week’ - read more here.

Designed by Liz Dutton, and her husband Greg (of Midland Architecture), their renovated family home is full of history, designed by Ohio’s first female architect Florence Kenyon Hayden Rector.

After passing through a series of owners and years of neglect, the house was abandoned in the 1980s. The structure was due to be demolished and would have been lost forever had it not been for Liz and Greg who stepped in and salvaged the home. The couple found inspiration in the history of the home and were motivated to breathe new life into it, honouring the past design but unconstrained by a preservationist approach to restoration.

Starting with the kitchen design first, the couple let this inform how the rest of the space was interpreted. It is here that a pair of our 1950s vintage Czech pendant lights salvaged from a hotel lobby in Prague, Czechoslovakia, are suspended and framed in the window, illuminating the counter below. Elsewhere in the dining room, two of our 1960s retro pendant lights are suspended over the table creating a statement that subtly fits into the interior.

Speaking to US online interiors magazine Remodelista, Greg says: “In the kitchen, it became a fun challenge to make the layout work while keeping all of the window locations intact. I feel like it gives the house an Old World feel.”

"The pendant lights above the sink are vintage from skinflint," continues Greg. "They’re such a great resource because their lighting is all vintage but at really great prices.'
