Spring Summer 2013 Makers Marks

14-03-2013

In an age of mass production, more and more of us seek the unique, looking for something special – something entirely original.

Each and every light in Skinflint’s eclectic catalogue has been reclaimed and sensitively restored to retain its original character. But directors Chris and Sophie Miller, who personally source every item in Skinflint’s range, are lucky to salvage some pieces that come with the stamp of their original creator; engraved, etched or cast like a memory, a fingerprint in the fabric of the luminaire that tells the story and life of the light. Skinflint’s collection for Spring Summer 2013, entitled Makers’ Marks, brings you a handpicked selection of just such lights, which span almost a century of European production. From Hungarian factory enamels to fire fighters’ portable search-lights, converted medicinal heat lamps and machinists’ lathe work lights, each light bears the unique mark of its history.

Sophie comments: “Owning one of these completely original items is like holding a time capsule in your hands.”

Chris adds: “These lights were made in a period where the term ‘planned obsolescence’ did not exist. The fact they’re still in existence nearly 100 years after their manufacture is testament to their quality – good design will always stand the test of time, as well as the rigours of its intended purpose.”
