Origin: Japan

Due to the location we rarely have the opportunity to reclaim and restore light fixtures from Japan. The majority of the products we do reclaim and restore are salvaged from Japanese cargo ships which, after serving long lives at sea, are decommissioned and dismantled at the world’s ship breaking yards in India and Bangladesh. Often produced in Brass, Copper or Aluminium a single ship may contain many thousands of the same light fixture.

Restoration

Once a light has undergone preparatory treatment and the degraded surface has been removed, we then begin the journey to bring it back to life. At Skinflint we tend not to repaint surfaces, this would make the lights look too ‘new’ and they’d lose some of their individuality. So, with ferrous metals such as iron and steel, we linish the surface on large rotating wire wheels adding depth, grain and highlights to the casting details and bringing out the light’s character through surface and patina.

A quick word from our customers

Spot on

I’ve now purchased five different products, over two homes refurbishments. Alongside the product, the service, speed, packaging etc. it is spot on. It’s only Skinflint that make me wish I had another project to work on and a larger property to kit out.

It’s been a pleasure working with you!

I’ve been trying to work with multiple different European based companies for different projects and have had the hardest time communicating. skinflint were wonderful and extremely punctual especially with the time difference as well!

Finishing touches

Lighting is critical to any room and when it came to putting the finishing touches to our vintage kitchen, we came to skinflint, and we found exactly what we wanted.

- Estelle | London | UK

A piece of history

We found exactly what we wanted at skinflint: large industrial pendant lights from an old Dunlop Aerospace factory. They fill the space beautifully and we often get asked where they were sourced. With such heritage attached to them, they are like a piece of history that adds to the modern vintage feel we wanted to create.
