1930s Sunco church lighting

Era: 1930s Origin: UK

Early 1930s silver-backed glass pendants by Sunco, salvaged from a church in Surrey, UK. Sensitively restored by hand and retaining the beautiful patina to the reflective glass, it features the original nickel-plated gallery and bracket allowing light to be directed where desired.

Origin: UK

Lighting design in the UK benefitted from a free market. Different companies were working at the same time, designing and producing similar products for the same market. Often with only slight differences in their style, they constantly upgraded and improved their original designs. The products we salvage come from the old industrial heartland of England. This area of the UK was once the boiler room of the British economy - from the potteries of Stoke, through the engineering works of Birmingham, to the wool, textile and cotton mills of Oldham and Manchester.

Restoration

The restoration process our lighting goes through can take many months. First, we gently disassemble each light fitting allowing us to spot any flaws and plan how best to bring it up to modern electrical standards. Then, our team of experts patiently restore each component by hand. Typically, this might mean: Soda-blasting – an environmentally friendly way to remove old paint; Polishing – to restore and revitalise the surface of the light; Lacquering – a sealing process that protects the light’s surface from further deterioration; and finally rewiring – so the light works perfectly, every time.
