American searchlight by Crouse-Hinds

Era: 1950s Origin: U.S.A

A stunning floor light comprising of an American searchlight by Crouse-Hinds mounted on a British made 'Scopas' sculptors modelling stand, by designer and manufacturer Alec Tiranti Ltd. The light and stand have a number of features and details which make it a real one-off.

U.S.A

Origin: U.S.A

Unlike the communist Eastern Bloc countries, lighting design in mid-century U.S.A. benefitted from a free market. Different companies were working at the same time designing and producing similar products for the same market, often with only slight differences in their style. Due to the location we rarely have the opportunity to reclaim and restore light fixtures from the U.S.A., but some of our perennial favourites are the old signal lights that adorned the highways of the midwest. We reconfigure and restore these timeless classics into functional pendant lights, for both residential and commercial use.

Restoration

The light and sculptors stand have been disassembled and every component examined, carefully restored and re-assembled by hand. The aluminium has been soda-blasted before being polished by hand. All the original features have been retained including the convex glass embossed with the makers mark and the mechanical aiming lock, which allows the fitting to be angled laterally. The collapsible tripod stand has a cast top plate with lovely detailing and the revolving top allows the light to be rotated 360 degrees, while the adjustable support allows the light to be raised and lowered.

Crouse Hinds

Manufacturer: Crouse Hinds

Crouse Hinds is one of the oldest light manufacturers in the U.S. and were founded during 1897 in Syracuse, New York. Initially producing a patented tram car headlight, the firm grew to produce (amongst other items) switches, electrical conduits, traffic lights, airport lighting and even the lighting for Panama Canal. The company name is still in use today as a subsidiary of Cooper Industries, however the traffic signal production ended in 1981.
