XL industrial light by Simplex

Era: 1950s Origin: UK

A stunning feature light manufactured by British manufacturer Simplex, salvaged from an industrial complex in England. The large end housing and twin lamp construction make this an impressive piece. Sensitively restored and polished by hand with the original glass tubes and maker's plaques, updated for modern LED technologies.

UK

Origin: UK

Lighting design in the UK benefitted from a free market. Different companies were working at the same time, designing and producing similar products for the same market. Often with only slight differences in their style, they constantly upgraded and improved their original designs. The products we salvage come from the old industrial heartland of England. This area of the UK was once the boiler room of the British economy - from the potteries of Stoke, through the engineering works of Birmingham, to the wool, textile and cotton mills of Oldham and Manchester.

Restoration

Wherever possible we retain the original finish of a light in respect to its authentic history and heritage. These pendants have been restored in our workshops: first soda blasted to remove their degraded surface; then polished to add shine and grain, highlighting the casting details as well as bringing out the light’s character through surface and patina.

About the LED lamp

This product is fitted with the latest in energy-saving technology. Two LED lamps, with an average life of 50,000 hours each, sit within an etched diffusion sleeve which prevents glare and creates an even distribution of warm light (2700-3000K) when illuminated. It is supplied as standard with non-dimmable switched lamps. Alternatively, dimmable lamps with a remote module (Leading/Trailing edge, Dali/DMX or 1-10v) can be supplied - please contact the studio for more information.

What’s the difference in brightness between a LED bulb, a fluorescent bulb, and a traditional 60w filament bulb?

In simple terms, bulb brightness is measured in lumens. Lumens (denoted by lm) are a measure of the total amount of visible light (to the human eye) from a bulb or light source. As a comparison: one of the LED bulbs is 2475lm; a fluorescent bulb of the same length is 2460lm, and a traditional 60w filament bulb is 800lm.

Simplex Electric Co

Manufacturer: Simplex Electric Co

Simplex Electric Co was formed in 1932 when Credenda Conduit Co and Simplex Conduits Ltd of Garrison Lane, Birmingham, merged. In addition to lighting equipment and conduits, the company began to manufacture Creda domestic cooking appliances. Between 1932 and 1965 Simplex Electric Co produced a wide range of lighting products but is primarily recognised for its early elegant prismatic street lanterns, bulkheads and latterly for linear industrial fluorescent fixtures. Then as the mass mergers of the 1960s unfolded, the company was bought by General Electric of the U.S.A. and production as Simplex stopped.
