Vintage head lamp (MK3)

Era: 1920s

Stunning head lamp pendant with original dappled glass lens and internal reflector converted to a suspended feature luminaire. The interesting and varied surface patinas add individual character and have been 'frozen' in time via the application of clear lacquer.

Restoration

Different materials require different processes. At skinflint we are fascinated by interesting surfaces and patinas, that’s why we tend not to repaint our lights as this can make them look too ‘new’ and they lose some of their of individuality. During restoration non-ferrous metals such as aluminium are often sealed using crystalline waxes, or occasionally left raw so the surface can develop an interesting lustre over time. Ferrous metals such as iron and steel will usually have a clear lacquer powder-coated onto the surface to prevent oxidisation. Woods are waxed to bring out grain and protect the surface. All forms of surface sealing are designed to protect and enhance the surface of the lights.
