Salvaged 1950s British tank lights

Era: 1950s Origin: UK

Stunning pair of Britsh tank lights converted to a suspended feature pendant, ideal over a kitchen island or dining table. Refurbished and restored using soda blasting and lacquering to seal the steel enclosures and bar, still with the original prismatic glass.

Origin: UK

Lighting design in the UK benefitted from a free market. Different companies were working at the same time, designing and producing similar products for the same market. Often with only slight differences in their style, they constantly upgraded and improved their original designs. The products we salvage come from the old industrial heartland of England. This area of the UK was once the boiler room of the British economy - from the potteries of Stoke, through the engineering works of Birmingham, to the wool, textile and cotton mills of Oldham and Manchester.

Restoration

Different materials require different processes. At skinflint we are fascinated by interesting surfaces and patinas, that’s why we tend not to repaint our lights as this can make them look too ‘new’ and they lose some of their of individuality. During restoration, ferrous metals such as iron and steel will usually have a clear lacquer powder-coated onto the surface to prevent oxidisation. All forms of surface sealing are designed to protect and enhance the surface of the lights.
