Linear industrial pendant lights by Thorlux

Era: 1950s Origin: UK

Vintage linear lights by British manufacturer Thorlux, salvaged from a decommissioned Rolls-Royce factory in Derby, UK. With distinctive black rim detailing, the original vitreous enamelled shade features a vented design allowing for an element of uplighting. Sensitively restored and updated for modern LED technologies.

Origin: UK

Lighting design in the UK benefitted from a free market. Different companies were working at the same time, designing and producing similar products for the same market. Often with only slight differences in their style, they constantly upgraded and improved their original designs. The products we salvage come from the old industrial heartland of England. This area of the UK was once the boiler room of the British economy - from the potteries of Stoke, through the engineering works of Birmingham, to the wool, textile and cotton mills of Oldham and Manchester.

Restoration

At skinflint we are fascinated by different materials and the interesting patinas that develop with age. That’s why we tend not to repaint our lights, instead preserving their authenticity and unique individual character. Different materials require different restoration processes, so in this case, ferrous metals such as steel will have a clear lacquer powder-coated onto the surface to prevent further oxidation, sealing and enhancing the look and longevity of the lights for decades more to come.

About the LED lamp

This product is fitted with the latest in energy-saving linear LED technology. The LED lamp,  with an average life of 50,000 hours, sits within an etched diffusion sleeve to prevent glare and create  an even distribution of warm light (2700-3000K). It is supplied as standard with a non-dimmable switched lamp. Alternatively, a dimmable lamp with a remote module (Leading/Trailing edge, Dali/DMX or 1-10v) can be supplied - please contact the studio for more information.

What’s the difference in brightness between a LED bulb, a fluorescent bulb and a traditional 60w filament bulb?

In simple terms, bulb brightness is measured in lumens. Lumens (denoted by lm) are a measure of the total amount of visible light (to the human eye) from a bulb or light source. As a comparison: this LED bulb is 2475lm; a fluorescent bulb of the same length is 2460lm; and a traditional 60w filament bulb is 800lm.
