Industrial munitions store lights

Era: 1950s Origin: UK

Sleek and stylish industrial pendants originally manufactured by Heyes. The lights were salvaged from a magazine at a mine in Fife, Scotland. Due to the volatile contents in the stores (explosives and detonators), the lights installed were required to be flameproof and sealed to prevent any risk of escaping sparks.

UK

Origin: UK

Lighting design in the UK benefitted from a free market. Different companies were working at the same time, designing and producing similar products for the same market. Often with only slight differences in their style, they constantly upgraded and improved their original designs. The products we salvage come from the old industrial heartland of England. This area of the UK was once the boiler room of the British economy - from the potteries of Stoke, through the engineering works of Birmingham, to the wool, textile and cotton mills of Oldham and Manchester.

Restoration

Each light has been sensitively refurbished and brought back to life by our team. The degraded surface has been removed, and the cast aluminium enclosure has been polished by hand, highlighting a lovely surface patina and the original manufacturer's castings. The cataoulge extract is from our own internal archive, which we study carefully to understand the heratige of each light.

Product details

Each light is supplied with new screw (E27) lamp holder, 2mtrs of adjustable wire suspension, elephant grey braided cable and ceiling mounting plate. (If you would prefer another colour cable, wire suspension or an E26 lamp holder for use in the USA, please just ask).

Heyes

Manufacturer: Heyes

We can't be certain of the exact origins of Heyes and Co. of Water Heyes Electrical Works, Wigan, but we think the company was established in the early part of the 20th century with the first records we’ve uncovered being dated 1922. For over 50 years Heyes specialised in the design and manufacture of industrial and explosion proof lighting intended for use in extreme locations such as oil refineries and the mining industry. Then, in 1986 the company was acquired by Petrel Ltd and the Heyes name disappeared.

A piece of history

We found exactly what we wanted at skinflint: large industrial pendant lights from an old Dunlop Aerospace factory. They fill the space beautifully and we often get asked where they were sourced. With such heritage attached to them, they are like a piece of history that adds to the modern vintage feel we wanted to create.
