Industrial LED lighting by Thorlux (V2)

Era: 1950s Origin: UK

Vintage fluorescent lights salvaged from the iconic decommissioned Rolls-Royce factory in Derby, UK - now converted for use with the latest LED technology. Vented vitreous enamelled shades allow for an uplighting effect. Assembled with the original steel trough - hand refurbished, blasted and lacquered.

UK

Origin: UK

Lighting design in the UK benefitted from a free market. Different companies were working at the same time, designing and producing similar products for the same market. Often with only slight differences in their style, they constantly upgraded and improved their original designs. The products we salvage come from the old industrial heartland of England. This area of the UK was once the boiler room of the British economy - from the potteries of Stoke, through the engineering works of Birmingham, to the wool, textile and cotton mills of Oldham and Manchester.

Restoration

Different materials require different restoration processes and at skinflint we are fascinated by non-standard surfaces and patinas. That’s why we tend not to repaint our lights, retaining their authenticity and individual character. During restoration ferrous metals such as steel will have a clear lacquer powder-coated onto the surface to prevent oxidation, sealing and enhancing the surface of the lights.

About the lamp

This product is fitted with the latest in energy-saving technology. The LED lamp, with an average life of 50,000 hours, sits within an etched diffusion sleeve which prevents glare and creates an even distribution of warm light (2700-3000K) when illuminated. It is supplied as standard with a non-dimmable switched lamp. Alternatively, a dimmable lamp with remote module (Leading/Trailing edge, Dali/DMX or 1-10v) can be supplied - please contact the studio for more information.

What's the difference in brightness between a LED bulb, a fluorescent bulb, and a traditional 60w filament bulb?

In simple terms, bulb brightness is measured in lumens. Lumens (denoted by lm) are a measure of the total amount of visible light (to the human eye) from a bulb or light source. As a comparison: this LED bulb is 2475lm; a fluorescent bulb of the same length is 2460lm; and a traditional 60w filament bulb is 800lm.

Thorlux

Manufacturer: Thorlux

Thorlux was founded by Frederick William Thorpe in 1936 in Small Heath, Birmingham. The company produced vitreous enamelled shades for lighting factories, workshops, mills and farm buildings during the progressive industrialisation of the 1930s through to the 1950s. Thorlux is still in existence over 75 years later, manufacturing a comprehensive range of professional lighting and control systems for architectural and industrial applications. The classic enamel shades from the 1950s with the distinctive Thorlux branding are one of our firm favourites.
