Restoration

Different materials require different restoration processes and at skinflint we are fascinated by non-standard surfaces and patinas. That’s why we haven’t repainted this large run of lights, but instead retained its original worn paint finish to emphase each light's individual character. During restoration each gallery has been waxed and sealed by hand enhancing the surface of the lights and preserving them for years to come.

About the LED lamp

This product is fitted with the latest in energy-saving technology. The LED lamp, with an average life of 50,000 hours, sits within an etched diffusion sleeve which prevents glare and creates an even distribution of warm light (2700-3000K) when illuminated. It is supplied as standard with a non-dimmable switched lamp. Alternatively, a dimmable lamp with remote module (Leading/Trailing edge, Dali/DMX or 1-10v) can be supplied - please contact the studio for more information.

What's the difference in brightness between a LED bulb, a fluorescent bulb, and a traditional 60w filament bulb?

In simple terms, bulb brightness is measured in lumens. Lumens (denoted by lm) are a measure of the total amount of visible light (to the human eye) from a bulb or light source. As a comparison: this LED bulb is 2475lm; a fluorescent bulb of the same length is 2460lm; and a traditional 60w filament bulb is 800lm.

Manufacturer's catalogue

Over the years we’ve built an internal archive of original catalogues from renowned lighting manufacturers. Helping us to investigate each light’s history, we study them closely for clues to assemble their whole story. The extract featured is taken from an original printed manufacturer's catalogue by Benjamin showcasing these particular ‘Flurolier fittings’. Explore more of our vintage fluorescent lights here.

Benjamin Electric

Manufacturer: Benjamin Electric

The Benjamin Electric Manufacturing Company was founded by Reuben Berkley Benjamin in Chicago, Illinois in 1898. With the popularity of its lighting, the company expanded rapidly throughout the USA and Canada and then finally abroad, to England - more specifically London - which is where our shades were manufactured. Benjamin was a prolific inventor, mostly in the field of electric lighting. One of his most influential designs was the R.L.M. enamel shade - an influence so profound that this design is what we now recognise as the classic industrial enamel.
