British industrial flameproof lights by Heyes

Era: 1950s Origin: UK

Imposing flameproof surface mounted lights by British manufacturer 'Heyes'. Salvaged from a decommissioned 1950s petrol chemical works in Northeast London, UK, they were once installed to illuminate the vast fuel silos on the industrial site.

Origin: UK

Lighting design in the UK benefitted from a free market. Different companies were working at the same time, designing and producing similar products for the same market. Often with only slight differences in their style, they constantly upgraded and improved their original designs. The products we salvage come from the old industrial heartland of England. This area of the UK was once the boiler room of the British economy - from the potteries of Stoke, through the engineering works of Birmingham, to the wool, textile and cotton mills of Oldham and Manchester.

Restoration

Once a light has undergone preparatory treatment and the degraded surface has been removed, the path is clear for us to bring it back to life. The refined design of the two-part polished aluminium enclosure has a nice finned detailing to the lower half, along with cast manufacturer's branding on the upper half, in which the original flameproof glass is set.

Heyes

Manufacturer: Heyes

We can't be certain of the exact origins of Heyes and Co. of Water Heyes Electrical Works, Wigan, but we think the company was established in the early part of the 20th century with the first records we’ve uncovered being dated 1922. For over 50 years Heyes specialised in the design and manufacture of industrial and explosion proof lighting intended for use in extreme locations such as oil refineries and the mining industry. Then, in 1986 the company was acquired by Petrel Ltd and the Heyes name disappeared.
