1970s Czech opaline wall lights

Era: 1970s Origin: Czechoslovakia (former)

Salvaged from a derelict glassworks factory in former Czechoslovakia, this large run of 1970s surface-mounted glass lights were manufactured during the twilight years of Communist rule in Eastern Europe and were abandoned with the fall of the Berlin Wall. Mounted on a porcelain base, a rounded cylindrical opaline shade provides a soft, even glow when illuminated. Perfect for smaller spaces in bars and restaurants.

Origin: Czechoslovakia (former)

Much of the lighting we salvage and restore from the former Eastern Bloc was produced in the manufacturing powerhouses of former Czechoslovakia. Under Communist rule the same design was often manufactured in three scaled versions to cater for varying bulb wattage. The country is also famed for its beautiful glassware, with both wall and ceiling opaline glass lights often being used in public and residential settings, such as housing blocks and schools.

Restoring vintage lights in the skinflint workshop

Restoration

In the mid 20th century, lights were designed with care and made to last. The work we do at skinflint is based on respecting and preserving the heritage of each piece. We have three guiding principles: to salvage the best lighting from the 1920s to the 1970s; to restore every piece sensitively - without compromising its character; and to restore each fixture to the highest modern standards.
