1970s Czech opaline ceiling light

Era: 1970s Origin: Czechoslovakia (former)

Starting their journey in 1970s Prague, former Czechoslovakia, these retro ceiling lights once illuminated hallways in hotels. A glass opaline shade ensures a soft and diffused glow when lit, whilst a porcelain base keeps these understated and perfect for bathrooms and smaller spaces.

Origin: Czechoslovakia (former)

Much of the lighting we salvage and restore from the former Eastern Bloc was produced in the manufacturing powerhouses of former Czechoslovakia. Under Communist rule the same design was often manufactured in three scaled versions to cater for varying bulb wattage. The country is also famed for its beautiful glassware, with both wall and ceiling opaline glass lights often being used in public and residential settings, such as housing blocks and schools.

Restoration

Once we’ve salvaged a collection of lights, we bring them home to our studio and begin the slow process of restoration. Each light is disassembled and we examine every component for damage and flaws, so we know which can be kept, and which need to be replaced. We then hand over to our experts – in-house and locally – to carefully restore each component by hand. That often begins with soda-blasting (an environmentally friendly way to remove old paint), before hand-polishing, lacquering and rewiring.
