1960s circular Czech lights

Era: 1960s Origin: Czechoslovakia (former)

Salvaged from a derelict glassworks factory in former Czechoslovakia, these 1960s ceiling lights were manufactured by the Communist state and abandoned with the fall of the Berlin Wall. A semi-matte opaline shade provides an even glow of illumination, contrasting against a black aluminium wall plate. Perfect for creating ambient lighting in lounges, bedrooms and kitchens.

Origin: Czechoslovakia (former)

Much of the lighting we salvage and restore from the former Eastern Bloc was produced in the manufacturing powerhouses of former Czechoslovakia. Under Communist rule the same design was often manufactured in three scaled versions to cater for varying bulb wattage. The country is also famed for its beautiful glassware, with both wall and ceiling opaline glass lights often being used in public and residential settings, such as housing blocks and schools.

Restoring vintage lights in the skinflint workshop

Restoration

Where possible we retain the original finish of a light, in celebration and respect of its history and heritage. However, sometimes leaving a surface as we find it just isn’t possible. Some lights made from non-ferrous metals, such as aluminium, arrive so severely degraded we need to remove their outer layers to allow any further surface treatment to be applied. We do this using an environmentally friendly technique known as ‘soda blasting’ which applies bicarbonate of soda to a surface under high pressure. The crystals explode at the point of impact and this ‘blasts’ the layer of degradation away - leaving the surface clean for the next stage in restoration.
