1930s Philips Phililite pendants

Era: 1930s Origin: UK

Salvaged from Fishers, an electrical store in Norwich, these 1930s 'Phililite' Art Deco pendants manufactured by Dutch powerhouse, Philips, lived in an attic stockroom for nearly 90 years. Narrowly surviving the Baedeker Blitz during WWII, these pendants were found remarkably unscathed, kept safe by their original boxes. Carefully restored, each stepped-glass opaline pendant retains all original components, including a chrome plated fixed rod. Fantastic feature lights in foyers, or as a centrepiece in dining rooms and lounges.

Origin: UK

Lighting design in the UK benefitted from a free market. Different companies were working at the same time, designing and producing similar products for the same market. Often with only slight differences in their style, they constantly upgraded and improved their original designs. The products we salvage come from the old industrial heartland of England. This area of the UK was once the boiler room of the British economy - from the potteries of Stoke, through the engineering works of Birmingham, to the wool, textile and cotton mills of Oldham and Manchester.

Restoration

At skinflint our approach to restoration is different for each and every light that we salvage. These Philips Phililite pendants were manufactured almost 100 years ago so their electrical components need modernisation, but their stepped-glass opaline shades and suspensions are beautifully preserved in the boxes they were originally shipped in. Having survived WWII hiding in an attic, each one remains unused and even features original shipping labels.

Pictured below is St Andrews Street in Norwich, just after the Blitz of the 1940s. Fisher’s narrowly missed the bombings - it’s this very electrical store that these Philips Phililite pendants were salvaged from, each one remaining amazingly unscathed despite the bombs. Look closely and you’ll even spot a sign to the right with a 1930s Philips logo. Read more on our blog.
